What Is a Tachymeter?

The word comes from the Greek tachys (speed) and metron (measure). Literally: speed measurer.
The tachymeter works in conjunction with the chronograph function (the stopwatch). You start the chronograph when an object passes a starting marker, stop it when the object passes an ending marker exactly 1 kilometre (or 1 mile) away, and then read the speed directly from the tachymeter scale where the chrono seconds hand has stopped. If it takes 40 seconds, the speed is 90 km/h. If it takes 24 seconds, the speed is 150 km/h. Swiss watchmakers calculated the speed for every second from 7.2 seconds (500 km/h) to 60 seconds (60 km/h) and engraved the results in a logarithmic scale around the bezel. The tachymeter was born.

The formula behind a tachymeter is beautifully simple:

Speed = 3600 ÷ Elapsed Seconds
That's it. 3600 is the number of seconds in one hour. If you divide 3600 by the number of seconds it takes to cover one unit of distance (1 km or 1 mile), you get the speed in units-per-hour (km/h or mph).
The tachymeter scale on your watch is simply this formula pre-solved for every second. At the 12-second mark, the scale reads 300 (because 3600 ÷ 12 = 300). At the 30-second mark, it reads 120 (3600 ÷ 30 = 120). At the 45-second mark, it reads 80 (3600 ÷ 45 = 80). At the 60-second mark, it reads 60 (3600 ÷ 60 = 60).
This is why the tachymeter scale is not linear — the numbers bunch together at the start (high speeds = short times = closely spaced markings) and spread apart at the end (low speeds = longer times = wider spacing). It's a logarithmic scale that mirrors the inverse relationship between time and speed.
This is also why most tachymeters start at 500 and end at 60. Below 60 km/h (where the elapsed time exceeds 60 seconds), the chrono seconds hand passes the 12 o'clock position and the scale can't display the result without a second revolution. Above 500 km/h (below 7.2 seconds), the markings are too close together to read accurately. The 60-500 range covers 99% of real-world speed calculations.
How to Use a Tachymeter — Step by Step
Here's the exact procedure, using the Paddock '74 as the example. This works identically on any chronograph with a tachymeter scale.
Identify a Known Distance
You need a fixed distance of exactly 1 kilometre. On a highway, kilometre markers are placed every 1 km. On a running track, 2.5 laps of a standard 400m track = 1 km. On a race circuit, choose any two points that are exactly 1 km apart.
The tachymeter works with any unit — 1 mile gives you mph, 1 km gives you km/h. The distance just has to be exactly one unit.
Start the Chronograph
Press the upper pusher at 2 o'clock exactly when the object (car, runner, cyclist, you) crosses the starting point. The chronograph seconds hand begins sweeping around the dial.

Start chrono at one kilometre marker. Stop at the next. Read speed. This is how police originally estimated vehicle speed before radar guns — and it still works.
Production Rate
Time how long one unit takes to produce. The tachymeter reading tells you units-per-hour. If one widget takes 24 seconds, the tachymeter reads 150 = 150 units/hour.
Hourly Earnings
If you earn per task, time one task. Tachymeter shows tasks-per-hour. Multiply by your rate per task. A freelancer completing a task in 20 seconds? That's 180 tasks/hour.
The tachymeter is fundamentally a rate calculator. Speed is just the most famous application. Anything measured as "units per hour" can be read from the scale — as long as one unit takes between 7.2 and 60 seconds to complete.
Why the Tachymeter Survived the Digital Age
GPS exists. Phone speedometers exist. Onboard telemetry exists. Every car built since 2005 has a digital speedometer accurate to 0.1 km/h. So why is the tachymeter still on every racing chronograph in 2026?
