How a Galaxy Is Born
The four-step sapphire printing process that puts a nebula on the back of every Cypher Aphelion.
There's a galaxy on the back of the Cypher Aphelion. Not a sticker. Not a decal. Not a laser-etched approximation of something cosmic. An actual nebula, printed directly onto sapphire crystal — the same material used on the front of watches that cost ten times as much.
Most watch brands at this price point use a pressed steel caseback. Blank, stamped with a logo, never looked at again. Some offer a clear exhibition back to show the movement. Very few attempt artwork. Almost none attempt it on sapphire.
We did. And the process of getting there taught us something about what it means to build a watch that respects the person wearing it — even on the side they'll rarely see.
When we started designing the Aphelion caseback, the obvious route was printing on steel. It's cheaper. It's easier. Every factory knows how to do it. The artwork would have looked fine. Nobody would have questioned it.
But "fine" isn't what the Aphelion was built for.
Sapphire crystal changes everything about how artwork looks. Steel absorbs light — colours appear flat, muted, compressed. Sapphire transmits light. The nebula printed on sapphire has a depth and translucency that steel physically cannot replicate. Light passes through the crystal and interacts with the ink from both sides — from the outside as you look at it, and from the inside where the movement's rotor catches ambient light. The result is a caseback that doesn't just display a galaxy. It contains one.
The tradeoff: printing on sapphire is significantly harder than printing on steel. The surface is atomically smooth. Ink doesn't want to stay on it. The adhesion challenge required a dedicated manufacturing process that adds time, cost, and rejection rates to production. For 500 watches, it would have been perfectly rational to skip it.
We didn't skip it.

Someone asked us recently why we'd put this level of effort into the back of a watch. The part that sits against skin. The part most people never look at after the first week.
The answer is simple: the person wearing it knows it's there. And that changes what the watch means to them.
A watch with a blank caseback is a product. A watch with a galaxy on its back — printed on sapphire, fused at 120 degrees, stress-tested for permanence — is a decision. A decision to care about the parts nobody audits. A decision to assume the owner will flip the watch over one day and discover something that didn't need to be there, but is.
That's the difference between assembling a watch from commodity parts and building something that earns the right to be called a collection piece. We could have saved the cost. We could have used a printed steel disc. We could have left the caseback blank and put the budget into louder marketing.
But then it wouldn't be an Aphelion.
